The most visited towns in this popular region are Rocamadour and Sarlat-la-Caneda. Set in a gorge above a river and climbing up a cliff side, Rocamadour which is 16 kms from the house,  is one of the most spectacular sites of France and an ancient shrine for over 1000 years, as it has welcomed pilgrims on route to Santiago de Compostela.  Sarlat-la Caneda also about 16 kms away is one one of our favourite towns in the Dordogne and in France!  During the summer season you can enjoy buskers, mimes, musicians, and actors in the old town square!  The Perigord Noir takes it’s name due to the dark colour of its woods above the Dordogne and Vezere river valleys.  This region has many ‘plus beaux villages’, (designated the prettiest villages in France) among them La Rocque-Gageac, Domme, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and St Leon-sur-Vezere. These villages are a must visit, especially on market day and since they date back to medieval times they have cobblestone streets and a timeless atmosphere. There are plenty of sidewalk cafes where one can enjoy a glass of local wine and a delicious Perigourdine salad.  If you have the time, another way to discover this region and its ‘thousand chateaux’ is by boat, using the traditional gabarre (i.e. flat bottomed boat) or a canoe – although this will take longer! They can all be rented all along the river. You will have a spectacular scenic journey with steep limestone cliffs, perched towns full of architectural treasures, troglodyte caves, and forested hills.

The House:

This characteristic renovated family home is set in a beautiful rural landscape bordered by the Dordogne and Lot rivers.  It is near the village of Nadaillac de Rouge, which is in the heart of the Perigord Noir – an area famed for its countless chateaux and bastide villages, remarkable gardens, prehistoric caves and prestigious wine appellations.  Situated in the country with a backdrop of lovely green hills and valleys, this meticulously restored 18th century country house, retains a distinctive Perigourdine charm. It is constructed from the mellow local stone and has bright red shutters on the exterior. Inside the furnishings are welcoming and warm with traditional French furniture, open fireplace and a wooden beamed ceiling. As a bonus, a newly built guest cottage with private access allows further accommodation and privacy for two people within the party.  This property is a great one to escape the fast pace of city life, and enjoy a leisurely pace, visiting the nearby market for fresh produce, then enjoying meals under the covered terrace.
